China’s top diplomat Wang Yi met with Jonathan Powell, the UK prime minister’s national security adviser, in Beijing, where he reiterated China’s firm position on Japan-related issues and called on the UK to continue adhering to the one-China principle. Wang emphasized that both China and the UK, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, share major responsibilities in maintaining global stability.
Wang encouraged the UK to view bilateral relations with long-term perspective and goodwill, advocating for deeper strategic communication, mutual trust, and cooperation. He said both countries should address disagreements candidly while prioritizing collaboration to promote stable and constructive China–UK ties.
Powell, representing the new Labour government, said the UK sees China as a key global player and aims to build a consistent and strategic relationship based on sustained dialogue and practical cooperation. Both sides also discussed international issues, including the Ukraine crisis, during the meeting.
