Daniel Ek will now officially guide Spotify’s “long arc” from the position of executive chairman, after announcing he is stepping down as CEO. The founder of the audio streaming powerhouse has named two of his top executives, Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström, as his successors in a co-CEO capacity.
The new leadership team will formally take charge on January 1st. Söderström, the chief product and technology officer, and Norström, the chief business officer, have been serving as co-presidents and have been the de facto operational leaders since 2023, according to the company.
This move is intended to “formalize” the existing leadership dynamic, a point that Ek himself emphasized. He stated that this change simply brings the job titles in line with the responsibilities that Söderström and Norström have already been fulfilling, ensuring a stable transition.
In his new role, Ek will be a hands-on chairman, focused on the company’s long-term strategic health. He will push Spotify to innovate with technologies like AI and to seize growth opportunities in untapped international markets, while also acting as a key ambassador for the company.
This strategic realignment of roles is a pivotal moment for Spotify. It allows the company to benefit from the focused operational expertise of its new co-CEOs, while its founder dedicates his energy to shaping the future of audio.
