Trump to Putin: Europe is Now in Charge of Ukraine’s Security

President Donald Trump has conveyed a direct and transformative message to Russian President Vladimir Putin: Europe is now in charge of providing security for Ukraine. This new policy fundamentally alters the U.S. role in the region.
Trump’s position was first consolidated during an August 18 meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European officials. Following this, he communicated the new reality to Putin, emphasizing the shift in responsibility to European nations.
The central directive from Trump is that Europe must provide the “significant security guarantees” for Ukraine’s sovereignty. The U.S. will no longer be the primary security underwriter, instead serving as “backup.”
This new security paradigm is being discussed in the context of broader U.S.-Russia relations. Trump has also mentioned that his dialogue with Putin includes the ambitious, long-term goal of reducing nuclear arms stockpiles after the resolution of the war in Ukraine.
