Instagram Encryption Ends: Is WhatsApp Now the Only Safe Meta Option?

With Instagram’s end-to-end encryption being removed on May 8, 2026, WhatsApp has become the only Meta platform offering genuine message privacy. Meta confirmed the Instagram change through a quiet help page update. The divergence raises important questions about privacy within the Meta ecosystem.

Encryption on Instagram launched in 2023 as an opt-in feature following Zuckerberg’s 2019 commitment. Low adoption gave Meta the justification to remove it. WhatsApp, by contrast, has offered default encryption for years and will continue to do so.

After May 8, all Instagram DMs will be accessible to Meta. WhatsApp messages, however, remain protected by end-to-end encryption by default. This creates a two-tier privacy system within Meta’s platform portfolio.

Law enforcement agencies had pushed for the Instagram change. The FBI, Interpol, and national bodies in the UK and Australia argued encryption was enabling crime. Child safety advocates backed their position. Australia reportedly saw the Instagram encryption feature deactivated before the global deadline.

Tom Sulston of Digital Rights Watch questioned whether WhatsApp’s retained encryption is the comfort it appears to be. He noted that both services are owned by the same company and that corporate policies can change. He also argued that requiring users to move from Instagram to WhatsApp for privacy is itself an indication of poor platform design.
