US and Taiwan Boost Defense Ties in Response to Security Threats

Taiwan and the United States are amplifying their collaboration in the defense sector amid rising security concerns, fostering increased investment and deeper integration of supply chains. This development was highlighted at the recent Taiwan-US Defense Industry Forum held in Taipei, where retired US Army General Charles Flynn commended Taiwan for its enhanced defense spending and military modernization efforts. Flynn emphasized that Taiwan’s focus on adopting advanced technologies signifies a robust commitment to safeguarding its security and sovereignty.

The forum witnessed the largest-ever US delegation, with 41 representatives marking their presence, underscoring the growing interest from American defense firms in Taiwan’s market. Flynn noted that the rising number of participating companies points to expanding business opportunities and the urgency prompted by regional security threats. Taiwan External Trade Development Council Chairman James Huang remarked that the bilateral relationship is evolving from traditional arms sales to a more strategic industrial partnership. Huang highlighted Taiwan’s expertise in semiconductors, ICT, and low-Earth-orbit satellite systems, which could enhance defense applications like drones and AI-enabled systems.

Huang further explained that Taiwan’s manufacturing prowess and system integration skills complement the advanced defense technologies of the US, creating significant collaborative opportunities. According to US-Taiwan Business Council President Rupert Hammond-Chambers, the cooperation aims not only to address Taiwan’s defense requirements but also to bolster global supply chains. He described the synergy between US defense innovations and Taiwan’s technology sector as a formidable basis for developing a competitive defense industry ecosystem.

In addition to its partnership with the US, Taiwan is expanding its engagement with European allies. Earlier this month, officials from Ukraine, Poland, and the Czech Republic visited Taiwan to explore defense technology cooperation and potential reconstruction initiatives, including collaboration in the drone and IT sectors. This growing partnership reflects a concerted effort to enhance the resilience of defense supply chains and strengthen technological cooperation in the face of shifting geopolitical challenges.
