Experts Warn: Wet Hair at Night May Harm Scalp and Hair Health

Regularly going to bed with wet hair might seem like an innocuous habit, but dermatologists warn that it can have adverse effects on both your scalp and hair. The combination of warmth and moisture on a damp scalp during sleep can create an ideal environment for the proliferation of naturally occurring fungi and microbes. Over time, this could result in scalp issues such as itching, irritation, dandruff-like flakes, excessive oiliness, and discomfort.

In addition to scalp concerns, wet hair is more prone to damage. The friction caused by hair rubbing against a pillow as you toss and turn in your sleep can weaken the strands, leading to breakage, split ends, and frizz. While this doesn’t directly cause hair loss, repeated breakage can gradually make hair appear thinner over time.

Experts suggest that occasionally sleeping with wet hair is unlikely to cause significant problems, especially for those with a generally healthy scalp. However, if this practice becomes a regular habit, it may increasingly affect hair strength and scalp health.

To mitigate these risks, it is recommended to allow hair to dry naturally before sleeping or to use a hair dryer set to a cool or low-heat setting to eliminate excess moisture. Ensuring the scalp is dry before going to bed can contribute to healthier hair and reduce the likelihood of irritation or microbial growth.
