House Approves $500M Military Aid Package for Taiwan

The US House of Representatives has approved an appropriations bill for the upcoming fiscal year, allocating US$500 million in Foreign Military Financing to Taiwan. This funding is part of a broader package that supports Taiwan’s involvement in international organizations. The bill passed with a tight 217-209 vote.

While the bill proposes a reduced discretionary budget of US$47.32 billion compared to the current fiscal year, it continues to prioritize support for important US allies, including Taiwan, Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. The legislation underscores a strategic focus on addressing threats from nations like China and Iran.

A significant aspect of the bill is its directive to the US Secretary of State and the Defense Secretary to expedite the delivery of defense equipment and services to Taiwan. Additionally, it ensures at least US$4 million is allocated to the Global Cooperation and Training Framework, managed by the American Institute in Taiwan.

The legislation also includes a clause prohibiting the use of funds to create or display maps that inaccurately depict Taiwan’s territorial boundaries or governmental system. This measure highlights the importance of accurately representing Taiwan’s status in official documents.

For the bill to take effect, it must receive approval from the US Senate before being forwarded to the president for final authorization. This legislative move reflects ongoing US commitment to supporting Taiwan amid regional tensions.
