Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized the importance of strengthening ties and broadening cooperation with Egypt as he commenced his visit to Cairo. This visit marks 70 years of diplomatic relations between China and Egypt, underscoring a longstanding bond between the two nations. Upon their arrival, Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were warmly greeted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and his wife.
In a message released prior to his visit, Xi highlighted the resilience of the China-Egypt relationship, which has remained robust despite shifts in the global landscape. He advocated for renewed efforts to enhance the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, encouraging development in new areas of collaboration. Xi emphasized the alignment of national development goals between China and Egypt, suggesting that joint efforts should focus on practical initiatives within the Belt and Road Initiative that promise long-term economic benefits.
President Xi also called for expanding cooperation in diverse fields such as education, tourism, science and technology, healthcare, sports, and archaeology. He expressed that by fostering stronger exchanges, the two countries could deepen mutual understanding and fortify their people-to-people connections. Furthermore, Xi underscored the importance of mutual support on major issues, positioning Egypt as a crucial partner in fortifying China’s ties with Arab countries and the African continent.
Both China and Egypt, as members of the Global South, play significant roles on the international stage. Xi urged for enhanced coordination on global issues, advocating for stronger multilateral cooperation and collective efforts to promote global peace and stability. His visit is anticipated to bolster political and economic relations between Beijing and Cairo, paving the way for new opportunities in trade, infrastructure, and technology sectors.
