European Parliament Backs Taiwan’s Global Role Against Chinese Pressure

The European Parliament has underscored its support for Taiwan by rejecting China’s attempts to limit the island’s participation in international organizations and exchanges. This development, welcomed by Taiwan, emphasizes a commitment to cross-strait peace and enhanced collaboration between Taiwan and the European Union.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that the European Parliament’s recommendation reflects shared democratic values and strong existing economic, trade, and technological ties between Taiwan and the EU. The recommendation stands against any unilateral efforts to alter the status quo across the Taiwan Strait through force or coercion.

Additionally, the European Parliament’s recommendation criticizes China’s alleged pressure tactics aimed at curbing Taiwan’s international involvement and raises alarm over the extraterritorial application of Chinese laws. It acknowledges Taiwan’s pivotal role in the global semiconductor industry and high-tech supply chains, urging stronger EU-Taiwan cooperation in sectors such as semiconductors, cybersecurity, and economic security.

The recommendation further encourages the EU to begin preparations for negotiations on a bilateral investment agreement or other frameworks to bolster cooperation on critical supply chains.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry expressed gratitude for the European Parliament’s ongoing focus on Taiwan’s international participation and regional stability. The ministry affirmed that Taiwan would continue collaborating with the EU and other like-minded partners to enhance technological cooperation, safeguard critical supply chains, and counter foreign information manipulation.

This development underscores the increasing significance of Taiwan-EU relations amid broader geopolitical tensions and concerns regarding the security of global technology and trade networks.
