China Wins Football Bronze at Asian Games After 28-Year Wait

China ended a 28-year wait for an Asian Games medal in men’s football by securing the bronze after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout win against Uzbekistan. The match, which took place at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, concluded with a 2-2 draw, leading to a tense penalty shootout.

Goalkeeper Li Hao emerged as the hero for China, making two crucial saves during the shootout. This victory marked China’s fourth Asian Games medal in men’s football, with previous successes including a bronze in 1978, a silver in 1994, and another bronze in 1998.

The game began with China taking an early lead in the 15th minute when Hu Hetao, after a one-two with Kuai Jiwen, confidently finished from inside the penalty area. However, Uzbekistan equalized just before halftime, thanks to Sardorbek Bakhromov’s well-executed goal in the 42nd minute.

China regained the lead eight minutes into the second half as Wang Yudong scored with a powerful shot from near the edge of the penalty area. Despite Zhang Yuning hitting the post in an attempt to extend China’s lead, Uzbekistan’s persistence paid off in the 89th minute. Shodiyor Shodiboyev netted the equalizer after Li Hao initially saved the shot.

With no extra time played in the bronze-medal match, the game proceeded directly to penalties, where Li Hao’s performance was pivotal for China. The victory not only ended a long-standing medal drought but also provided the team with a significant morale boost following their semifinal defeat to South Korea.
