The newly inaugurated Shengji Tunnel in Taipei is set to significantly reduce travel times and alleviate traffic congestion in the city’s Nangang District. Connecting Zhongxiao East Road with the access road to the National Biotechnology Research Park, the NT$1.878 billion infrastructure project promises improved connectivity and efficiency for commuters.
Spanning approximately 824 meters, with a 716-meter tunnel section, the Shengji Tunnel is strategically designed to enhance the flow of traffic along Zhongxiao East Road Section 7 and Academia Road. It also provides a quicker route between Nangang and the Sijhih District in New Taipei City. During peak hours, travel time between the research park and Nangang Station is expected to decrease from 15–20 minutes to under 10 minutes.
Beyond easing daily commutes, the tunnel offers a critical alternative route during emergencies, such as flooding on Academia Road. A separate path for pedestrians and cyclists has also been incorporated, underscoring the project’s commitment to accommodating diverse modes of transportation.
The National Biotechnology Research Park, which has been operational since 2018, is a significant hub for over 2,600 researchers and professionals. The park’s presence has been pivotal in driving the growth of biomedical research and biotechnology activities in the Nangang area, further amplifying the need for enhanced transportation infrastructure like the Shengji Tunnel.
