China has urged the Philippines to halt what it considers provocative actions in the South China Sea, asserting that its coast guard will remain vigilant in protecting China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime interests. This statement comes after a recent mission by the Philippines to resupply a grounded vessel at Ren’ai Jiao, also known as Second Thomas Shoal. According to Chinese officials, the Philippine vessel entered the contested area despite receiving warnings from Beijing.
During the supply operation, China’s coast guard monitored the Philippine ship and issued warnings, actions that Beijing claims were within the bounds of the law. The Chinese government has accused the Philippines of breaching commitments under the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, cautioning that such actions could jeopardize regional peace and stability.
China has reiterated its intention to continue law enforcement operations around Ren’ai Jiao and other locations within the Nansha Qundao, the Chinese name for the Spratly Islands, to uphold its maritime rights as it sees fit. The ongoing tensions underscore the broader disputes between China and the Philippines, alongside other Southeast Asian nations, over territorial claims in the South China Sea.
