Taiwan has taken a significant step in international disaster management by hosting global experts for the launch of the World Alliance for Disaster Management (WADM) in Taipei. The initiative aims to enhance international collaboration in disaster preparedness and response.
The event saw Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang emphasize the crucial role of cross-border cooperation. Lin pointed out that natural disasters often transcend national boundaries, making international partnerships vital for building resilience and improving preparedness efforts worldwide.
The WADM is designed to serve as a network connecting governments, emergency response agencies, businesses, academic institutions, and civil society organizations. Its primary goals include strengthening cooperation in disaster prevention, early warning systems, emergency response, and recovery operations.
Minister Liu drew attention to Taiwan’s past experiences, notably the international aid received following the 1999 Jiji earthquake, as a foundation for sharing expertise. Taiwan is committed to offering professional training and conducting joint exercises with alliance members to enhance global disaster response capabilities.
The alliance is set to prioritize information sharing, capacity building, and practical cooperation among its international members, with a focus on fostering a comprehensive understanding of disaster management strategies.
