Taiwan has urged Japan and the Philippines to ensure that their forthcoming discussions regarding maritime boundaries and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) do not infringe upon Taiwan’s rights and interests in the surrounding waters. This appeal comes after Japan and the Philippines announced plans to initiate negotiations aimed at defining maritime boundaries and continental shelf claims in line with international law. Experts have pointed out that some of the proposed zones may overlap with territories claimed by Taiwan.
According to Taiwanese officials, both Japan and the Philippines have reassured Taipei that any agreement reached in the future would not be legally binding on third parties and would adhere to established international legal norms. Taiwan’s government has stated its intention to continue dialogues with both nations to protect its maritime interests, which include fishing rights and access to resources in the region. The authorities emphasized that existing agreements with Japan and the Philippines will remain in effect.
This development occurs amid heightened regional tensions, particularly following China’s claims over waters east of Taiwan and its coast guard patrols in the area. Taiwan has rejected these claims, reiterating its stance on sovereignty and maritime jurisdiction.
Philippine officials have indicated that formal negotiations have yet to commence and highlighted that it is premature to predict the potential effects of any future agreement on fishing rights or territorial claims.
