Taiwan’s representative office in Papua New Guinea remains operational despite the Papua New Guinea government’s order for its closure, according to Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry. The ministry stated that the office continues to function normally, with Taiwanese representative Chiu Chen-yu maintaining regular communications with officials from Papua New Guinea’s Department of Foreign Affairs, and no significant disruptions have been reported.
The closure order was announced by Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko in July. Taiwan has expressed its discontent, noting that it was not consulted prior to the decision, and has lodged a formal protest against the move.
In response to the situation, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry is preparing to address various potential developments. The ministry emphasized its intention to continue seeking dialogue with Papua New Guinea to resolve the issue. In addition, Taiwan is looking to garner support from other countries to facilitate discussions aimed at keeping its representative office open.
