Taiwan is set to enhance its air defense capabilities with the construction of 26 additional hardened aircraft shelters, designed to accommodate an increasing number of F-16V fighter jets along the island’s east coast. Following the anticipated delivery of 66 new F-16V Block 70 jets from the United States, Taiwan’s F-16V fleet is expected to expand to between 110 and 120 aircraft. These new jets will be based at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung County, complementing the existing F-16V Block 20s stationed in Hualien County.
To safeguard this growing fleet, the air force plans to invest over NT$6.88 billion between 2027 and 2031 for the construction of these shelters in both Hualien and Taitung. Specifically, 22 shelters will be built in Hualien and four in Taitung. Additionally, five general aircraft hangars and supporting facilities will be developed in Hualien to support transport aircraft operations. This initiative follows a strategy of “one aircraft, one shelter,” aimed at enhancing the survivability of Taiwan’s fighter jets during potential military conflicts.
The timetable for this significant infrastructure project begins with initial project management, surveying, and design work in 2027. The subsequent steps will involve detailed design and contracting processes in 2028 and 2029, with construction slated to begin in 2030 and conclude by 2031. These fortified structures are expected to provide increased protection against explosive threats, ensuring that more fighter jets remain combat-ready in the face of sudden attacks.
In the context of these developments, President William Lai has called on military officers to swiftly adapt to evolving technologies and the global security landscape. He highlighted the importance of enhancing joint operations, bolstering asymmetric capabilities, and planning for future defense needs. President Lai also underscored the role of artificial intelligence as a supportive tool in these endeavors. Furthermore, he emphasized the necessity of sustaining military readiness and continued investment in national defense to uphold peace and safeguard Taiwan’s sovereignty.
