Taiwan Negotiates $4.4 Billion Stake in Alaska LNG Project

Taiwan is making strides in negotiations to invest up to $4.4 billion in the proposed Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, which could significantly enhance its energy security and economic ties with the United States. CPC Corp, Taiwan’s state-owned energy firm, has expressed interest in purchasing approximately 6 million tonnes of LNG annually, following a letter of intent signed in March last year.

The Alaska LNG project plans to produce around 20 million tonnes of LNG per year, involving a 1,299-kilometre pipeline and an export facility in Alaska. If negotiations are successful, Taiwan could begin receiving LNG deliveries as early as 2032. This venture is part of Taiwan’s broader strategy to diversify its energy sources and reduce its exposure to geopolitical risks by securing more reliable long-term energy supplies.

However, a definitive purchase agreement has yet to be finalized, and key aspects such as investment arrangements, ownership stakes, and commercial terms remain under discussion. The developers of the Alaska LNG project are seeking additional purchase commitments to secure the necessary financing to move forward with construction and export milestones.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs has emphasized that the partnership with the U.S. could offer an alternative supply route, shipping LNG directly across the Pacific, thus strengthening Taiwan’s energy security. The potential deal has been welcomed by U.S. President Donald Trump, who described Taiwan’s proposed purchase as a significant commitment that could enhance the project’s commercial viability.

The ongoing negotiations reflect Taiwan’s efforts to increase its LNG imports from the U.S., aligning with its objectives to bolster energy security and establish stronger economic links with international partners. As discussions progress, the outcome will be pivotal for both the Taiwanese energy sector and the developers of the Alaska LNG initiative.
