The humanoid robotics sector in China is witnessing a transformative phase as companies in the country make significant strides in embodied intelligence. This was evident at the recent World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, where Chinese-designed robots showcased extraordinary abilities in a variety of sporting competitions. Notably, some of these robots achieved feats that eclipsed existing human records, including Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second 100-meter sprint and Wayde van Niekerk’s 43.03-second 400-meter record.
This rapid development has spurred heightened competition among Chinese robotics firms striving to assert dominance in this burgeoning field. The advancements have also sparked a pivotal question: Has humanoid robotics arrived at its “iPhone moment”? This term, popularized by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in 2023, describes a significant technological breakthrough that propels an innovation from a nascent idea to widespread use, fundamentally altering industries and user interactions.
Wang Xingxing, the founder and CEO of Unitree Robotics, a prominent Chinese humanoid robot manufacturer, expressed a measured perspective on when such a breakthrough might occur. He suggested that embodied intelligence could reach an industry-defining moment akin to the impact of ChatGPT within two to three years, though he cautioned it might take as long as five to ten years if development progresses more slowly.
Wang shared these insights during the 2026 World Robot Conference held in Beijing on August 20. Just a day prior, Unitree Robotics marked a significant milestone by debuting on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market, where its shares surged by an impressive 460 percent by the close of trading.
