Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has arrived in Taiwan for a five-day state visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations and exploring opportunities for collaboration between the two nations. The visit underscores ongoing engagement between Saint Lucia and Taiwan, marking Pierre’s fourth trip to the island since assuming office in 2021.
During his stay, Prime Minister Pierre is scheduled to meet with Taiwan President William Lai Ching-te and other senior officials to discuss mutual interests and potential areas for cooperation. As part of the welcoming protocol, President Lai will host a military honors ceremony, and Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung will hold a formal banquet in Pierre’s honor.
The delegation from Saint Lucia accompanying Prime Minister Pierre includes Attorney General Leslie Mondesir, Senator Allison A Jean, and Saint Lucia Development Bank Chairman Daryl Raymond. Their itinerary also features visits to notable sites such as Cathay General Hospital, Taipei 101, and the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Museum of Innovation in Hsinchu.
Saint Lucia and Taiwan have a complex diplomatic history, initially establishing relations in 1984. However, ties were severed in 1997 when Saint Lucia shifted its diplomatic recognition to Beijing. The relationship was restored in April 2007, and Saint Lucia remains one of the countries that officially recognizes Taiwan over the People’s Republic of China.
This visit is expected to provide a platform for both nations to reinforce their diplomatic engagement and explore further cooperation in areas of mutual interest, reflecting a continued commitment to their bilateral relationship.
