Typhoon Champi to Bring Heavy Rain, Cooler Temperatures to Northern Taiwan

Typhoon Champi is expected to bring significant rainfall and cooler temperatures to northern Taiwan as it approaches the island later this week. The storm’s most substantial impact is forecast for Friday and Saturday, with heavy to extremely heavy rain anticipated in several regions before it moves towards Japan on Sunday.

Rainfall will initially affect northern and northeastern Taiwan, including the greater Taipei area and Yilan County, driven by the typhoon’s outer circulation and seasonal northeasterly winds. Mountainous areas, such as those in Hualien County and central Taiwan, may experience particularly heavy rain. As precipitation increases, temperatures in these areas are predicted to drop, with daytime highs potentially falling to around 23°C to 24°C starting Thursday. In contrast, Taitung County could see temperatures rise above 36°C on Friday due to warm, dry foehn winds from the mountains.

Typhoon Champi was last reported approximately 1,050 kilometers east-southeast of Taiwan’s southernmost point and is moving west-northwest at approximately 23 kilometers per hour. Its projected path has shifted slightly westward, although there is still some uncertainty as forecasts are updated.

Authorities are considering issuing a sea warning late Wednesday or early Thursday, with a possible land warning later on Thursday depending on the typhoon’s progression and intensity. The storm is expected to veer away from Taiwan on Sunday, with rainfall gradually decreasing and becoming more concentrated in northeastern areas.

Residents, especially those in northern and eastern Taiwan and in mountainous regions, are advised to stay informed through official weather updates and prepare for potential heavy rain and associated disruptions.
