Saint Lucia and Taiwan Strengthen Partnership Focused on Education and Economic Growth

Saint Lucia is seeking to deepen its collaboration with Taiwan, focusing on education, agriculture, renewable energy, and climate change initiatives, according to Prime Minister Philip Pierre. During a five-day state visit to Taiwan, Pierre met with President William Lai in Taipei to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation and strengthening the existing relationship between the two nations.

Prime Minister Pierre highlighted shared challenges, such as the effects of climate change, pointing to an ongoing drought in Saint Lucia attributed to El Niño. This situation underscores the need for improved rainwater harvesting and water management systems. He also emphasized agricultural modernization, renewable energy development, and the enhancement of school infrastructure as key priorities for his government, noting that rising temperatures have made classroom environments increasingly uncomfortable.

Education was a significant focus of the discussions, with Pierre expressing gratitude for Taiwan’s continued scholarship support, which has benefited over 400 young Saint Lucians. He expressed interest in expanding these scholarship opportunities and the development of a modern cultural and creative arts center. Additionally, Pierre encouraged greater academic and professional exchanges, including opportunities for Saint Lucian doctors, researchers, and students in Taiwan.

President William Lai welcomed these initiatives and highlighted the growing cooperation between the two countries in both government and private-sector activities. He announced that the Taiwan External Trade Development Council would organize the 19th Taiwan-Saint Lucia trade exhibition in Saint Lucia next month, with more than 70 local and Taiwanese companies expected to participate, aiming to expand commercial partnerships.

Moreover, President Lai thanked Saint Lucia for its support of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, including its bid for full membership in the United Nations. Both leaders emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in addressing global challenges such as climate change and public health.

The discussions underscore the intention of Saint Lucia and Taiwan to enhance their partnership through education, trade, sustainable development, and closer people-to-people exchanges, reflecting a commitment to tackling shared challenges and fostering mutual growth.
