Nations Unite to Form Global AI Governance Body with 29 Members

An agreement to establish the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) was signed by representatives from 29 countries in Shanghai. This new independent intergovernmental body aims to enhance international collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

WAICO, with its headquarters in Shanghai, will direct its efforts toward reinforcing global AI governance, promoting international partnerships, and ensuring the safe and equitable development of AI technologies. The organization plans to operate by adhering to the principles outlined in the United Nations Charter, focusing on a people-centered approach to AI progress.

The founding members of WAICO include nations such as Kazakhstan, Laos, Pakistan, Russia, Indonesia, and China. These countries have committed to working together to improve AI governance on a global scale, fostering cooperation among member states to maximize the positive impact of artificial intelligence.

The organization’s mission is to ensure that AI technologies are developed and utilized in ways that are beneficial, safe, and accessible, with the overarching goal of serving humanity.
