A significant vehicle recall is underway in China, affecting approximately 4.3 million cars due to potential issues with emergency door-release handles. Tesla is at the forefront of this recall, with about 2.98 million of its Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles, both imported and locally made, included in the recall effort. This safety measure, scheduled to commence on September 25, addresses concerns that these handles may be hard to find or operate during accidents or electrical failures.
The recall aims to ensure that occupants and rescuers can quickly identify and use emergency mechanical door-release handles after severe collisions. Solutions offered to rectify the issue include enhanced warning labels, better markings, and over-the-air software updates for the affected vehicles. The urgency of this recall highlights regulators’ growing concerns over passenger safety during emergencies.
In addition to Tesla, several other automakers are part of this large-scale recall. Xiaomi is recalling approximately 390,000 vehicles, Leapmotor about 371,000, and Xpeng around 264,000 vehicles. These efforts reflect a broader industry response to regulatory scrutiny over vehicle safety features in China.
China’s regulatory landscape is evolving, with authorities tightening safety requirements for vehicles. Part of these changes includes a plan to prohibit concealed door handles from 2027 onwards, underscoring the emphasis on improving safety standards and ensuring that all vehicles on the road are equipped to protect occupants effectively during emergencies.
